JENNY BROWN
I’m an artist who paints primarily in oils but, prior to developing M.E.in 2010, I was a teacher. I paint wet-on-wet in a fairly realist style, although I’m trying to loosen up by using larger flat brushes into a more painterly style. I can only work for one hour before I’m tired but luckily I work quickly: I work in silence, kind of like a meditation, where I retreat into a quiet part of my brain and let the eye and hand fly over the canvas. Once its dry, I do a minimal touch up with a small rigger brush to define a few relevant details, such as footprints, grasses or waves. I walk away and come back a few times before I consider further marks: would it add or detract?
I’m building my practice by attending Troon Art Club demonstrations by artists such as Nichol Wheatley. He opened my eyes to composition using golden section. I’m interested in where the skyline is, a route where the eye is drawn into the composition and where the main focus is placed. Exploring this is helping me to rule out irrelevant details from my source photo.
I’m currently exploring mixed media, incorporating pewter and wire-sculptural forms into my paintings to create depth, structure and form.
My subject matter is always driven by Scotland: her beaches; her changeable weather; the wilds of the moorlands and my love of Scottish Gaelic at its heart. If the land itself could speak, I’m sure it would be in Gaelic.
